Answer: Yes. They are. This is because of the fact that they use the heat beneath the surface the earth to heat residences, buildings or commercial properties. These pumps do not need to burn any non-renewable fuel to produce heat as it happens in furnaces. The heat under the surface of the earth accumulates in abundance because the earth absorbs most of sun’s rays that reaches its surface. This temperature under the surface remains constant at 50 to 55 degree F all around the year. Harnessing this heat will never lead to depletion of the source. However, a geothermal unit does use electricity to operate the pump, the compressor, the blowers etc.
